That's what this device does, but your TV has to have a digital audio out and you need a digital audio cable.

Depending on the age of the receiver these inputs may or may not exist. Due to the age of the receiver you will probably not get Discrete 5.1
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Jim, I use this with my 30 year old Yamaha receiver 2 Channel, hooked up to an Xbox optical port, my son loves it, it was easy to install. I would expect if your receiver outputs 5.1 that you should get 5.1. However, if your old stereo has only 2 speakers, you probably won't get "surround sound" . You would need more speakers as well as a few more channels built into your stereo.
