This is not 5.1 compatible, must use PCM for this device. The Gefen GTV-DD-2-AA does Dolby Digital conversion to 2 channel stereo. You will need to direct connect to the 6 channel inputs to get 5.1 sound. Some computers have the 6 channel outputs for Dolby Digital. Search 5.1 Rush Digital Sound Decoder for a solution.

I had a similar problem. My adapter for my head phones only worked with cable tv it didn't' work using apps on my smart TV. I contacted the head phone company and told I needed a specific adapter, not the one I purchased.
