It takes a second to start playing after you press the play button, the display should show a track number. If this isn't happening, make sure the slider on the slide isn't set so that the control for play and skipping tracks are locked. The slider on the side locks and unlocks the buttons so that you don't accidentally push them when you don't want to push them.
