Yup, many of us get electronics that are spare and the warranty is expired before we open it. It is probably a head alignment error. Try two or three CDs before you give up because the CDs have a little error too and the combination may allow some CDs to play and some not. Unless you have equipment and skills, it's cheaper to toss it than repair it. Sorry for that but it was probably dropped (even while still packaged) which offsets the mechanism.
