• You will need a casette adapter. Plug in to cigarette lighter. Can be used with car running while driving. If you want to sit and listen turn ignition off to acccessory .

• As you noted, because it has batteries, it will play through its own headphones in the car without the car being on. If you want to play it through the car audio system,the CD player has to be connected to your car audio system that has to be working (ignition in at least accessory position), depends on your car specifics for it to play through your car audio system.

• The Insignia Portable CD Player can be operated just on battery power. You don't have to plug into the car's power port.
