Yes, you can leave the bottom piece off, however.. you will need to take the little feet off the bottom of the 4 legs and screw into the holes where the support bar should go. This gives you the chance to level it. It looks great in our room that way.

I want to use this as a coffee table so not needing the metal legs would make this a great piece. The previous answers have me perplexed. Even if they are thinking that the weight limits and safety stuff would need to change without the metal legs, I'd expect it to be even safer; less chance to tip over, less likely the legs would break from too much weight... Looking at the Assembly Guide it doesn't look like it would need to have the metal base. It looks like it just screws to the bottom, nothing else seems to attach to those screws. Pages 15-17.
