The antenna can pick up electrical static that can interfere with the reception. I do not know how far away it would need to be but you could plug it in and see how the signal is. I put mine up as high as possible for best reception. Put above my kitchen cabinets. You could even hide it inside a cabinet as long as there is not alot of metal around it to block the signal.
