“I paired the headphones to my television and they worked great. I then paired it to my smart phone, worked great. When I tried to re pair it to the television , they would not pair. Is this a situation where it can only pair once and not re pair?”

absurd. they should pair and repair all day long.

Once any Bluetooth device is paired the first time, you do not need to repair it again. To connect to the television again, you would have to disconnect it from your phone in Bluetooth settings. It only works on one device at a time.

It might still be trying to re-pair with the smart phone. Try turning off the phones Bluetooth and it again with the tv

You probably need to turn off the Bluetooth on your phone, so it can connect with your tv.

No. I have mine paired with several different devices. However, sometimes I have to go back into my bluetooth setting & choose which device I want the AirPods to connect to at that moment.
