Yes you can cook smaller meals in the 6 qt. And yes you can make a cake.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can cook small meals for 2 to 3 persons. I bought the 6 qt for the same reason you have. I have not tried baking in the instant pot but it says it does, you just have to buy the spring foam pan and other accessories like steamer baskets etc.
