If you are using a docking station try the 2nd hdmi port on the station. When your computer is on right click anywhere on your desk top and select display settings. Scroll down to the bottom and there is a "multiple displays" section. There should also be a "detect" button to identify all monitors attached to your computer. Once you get your monitor going you can select a setting to have the external monitor on while your laptop is closed. Good Luck.
