“Why do I have to turn the mic volume on high just to hear myself. I thought you can use the microphone while playing music? It is very low but when I turn music off then microphone is louder. Why is this?”

Hi! Happy to help! The Sport XL's master volume knob controls the speaker's main mix volume, which includes your music AND the microphone. If you're experiencing difficulty hearing the microphone signal over your music, try turning the music down from your source device (e.g. your phone or tablet) and re-adjust the microphone and master volumes accordingly
