• The usb is used for sound feature. Its not required for firing up the system.

• No, not for my setup. Mine is plugged into the VGA connector of an old MAC G4 Quicksilver server, and the HDMI side is feeding the HDMI input of a 1080P 42" TV (looks great). The USB tail is hanging idle.
