• The USB attachment is for both power and sound. Some VGA ports do not provide power so yes we would recommend connecting the USB to the desktop.

• For me personally I have been successful in not needing the USB plugged in. Unfortunately I would not know how to help your situation. If you can plug the USB in and that fixes it, then I suppose we'll all know for sure!
