No, you can use just the right if you want (I use just 1 for cycling). You lose the left side controls (skip, volume) but you keep the voice control which you can use to skip (or change volume).

Remove the left earbud and music will still continue to play from right earbud but keep in mind controller for volume and song skip are located on the left earbud.
