How far of a distance can you be from your iPhone 6 null

I noticed walking from a gas pump to the building adjacent, (16ft-20ft) that as just about as soon as I stepped in, a dwindle down chime rang in my ear piece. I assumed it disconnected me from my phone that was sitting in my car. As soon as I stepped back outside it voiced “connected”.
