They give a little extra support to keep the buds in the ear. They fit on the inside part of your ear (not the ear canal). They don't go over the ear and therefore they have zero impact on glasses and hats.

Surprisingly they are comfortable and you don't even realize your wearing them. Sunglasses or prescription glasses wouldn't get in the way. I've found the in ear method to be the most effective as far as constant movement without falling out.
