“The JBL 1000 soundbar fails to wake up from standby, when an already paired device (android phone/tablet) tries to connect with it. I have to turn the soundbar ON and put it BT mode (using remote) for the paired device to connect! Is this normal behavior?”

I don’t know about that. I have had my soundbar for a few weeks so have not tried that
