You're not doing anything wrong. The only way to turn them off is by placing them in the charger. As for hearing during calls, these headphones only use the right ear for phone calls.

You can also manually turn them on and off by pressing on the JBL logo for 5 seconds.The JBL Free will automatically switch to mono mode on the RIGHT ear when the call starts. After the call ends stereo music mode will automatically resume. It's completely normal .
