A Great Addition to my "Go" Bag!!

These JBL, Free True Wireless In-Ear Headphones in Black are a great addition to my go bag. I have been using them for my workouts, and general music playback and phone calls for almost two weeks. There are many points of importance when purchasing these kind of devices. For myself, these types of headphones need to be easy to use, have decent sound quality, a stable connection system, ample battery life, and a comprehensive form factor/design.
These are easy to use, they paired with several of my devices simply. They also turn on immediately upon removal from their case. As with most of these kind of devices, on phone calls you will only be using the right earphone. Navigation of the button system is pretty easy. A single press of the right earphone button will answer/end a call, or pause/play music. A double press of the right earphone button will activate Google/Siri voice assistant. A single press of the left earphone button will advance your song selection. A double press of the left earphone button will return to the beginning of your song selection and a subsequent quick press will go back a song in your playlist. A triple press of either the left or right buttons will pair each earphone to the other. Holding either the left or right buttons for five seconds will cycle power. That is a lot to remember, and it's quite frustrating that the industry as a whole has not adopted a standard. I find that every manufacture is slightly different. Dropping the earphones into the case will also shut them down. I wish they had volume control on the earphones themself, having to adjust it on my phone is kind of a pain. You can use your voice assistant to change the volume, but for me that only works if I'm alone, I don't want to be that guy, talking to my phone...
Sound quality for these headphones is above what I expected. It was after playing around with the different ear tips, that I found a good balance between good bass without complete immersion. In most situations where these will be getting used, like exercising, walking, or shopping, I like to be able to use a little bit of ambient noise, to stay on the safe side of things. But with that being said if I have the urge to completely jam out to some tunes there is a pair of ear tips that will completely isolate me from the world and let me escape. While those ear tips are installed the bass of these little units are incredible.
I have had mixed results with the connection system of these units. While it's main bluetooth connection between the right headphone and the phone is rock solid to both my Google Pixel and my Moto X(what I use for my media device). The connection system that connects the left headphone to the right headphone is up for debate. During it's first week of use, I had no issue. This past week the stereo connection has been horrible. I have been trying to figure out what may have changed as far as interference, maybe I am just retaining water more than I was in the first week of use (just call me a waterbag), When stereo drops in and out while listening to music, it can be quite frustrating...I will be seeking a resolution. **Update** - I just tested something, the connection issue I was having was when I was connected to the Moto X. The issue completely went away when I used them with my Google Pixel. I am guessing that it has to do with what version bluetooth is on the phone and the Pixel has a more current version. So that reinforces the fact that each individual may get different results depending on their environment and on the equipment you are using them with. I really wish that JBL would have included a NFC chip on the case, so that connecting would be even easier, especially when I connect to different devices with this pair of headphones.
The battery life on these headphones is sufficient, I got almost three and a half hours on my first charge, three and three quarters on my second charge, and again almost three and a quarter on my final charge. I then had to recharge the case. I am not sure it was fully charged, but all four lights were on. With that being said my results show that if I got just one more use cycle out of them, it would be close to the 20 hour spec that is on JBL's website.
Where all of this can be lost, is if the headphones don't have a comprehensive form factor. The JBL, Free True Wireless In-Ear Headphones win in this category. They are small enough that while in my ear, they don't feel heavy, or unbalanced. The silicon skin that JBL provides for the body of the earphone does in fact keep the unit from moving around in your ear. The construction feels durable without the added bulk or weight. The buttons are easy to push with out me feeling like I am trying to destroy my ear canal. The one point of their design that made me actually state "Yes!" outloud, was the connection between the headphone and it's charging case. They incorporated rare earth magnets that almost grab the headphones right out of your fingertips and sucks them into the proper orientation for mating with their charging pins. I appreciate JBL for including this subtle feature.
All in all, these headphones are well designed, and pass all of my important points of purchase. While they aren't perfect, but they are almost. The two things I wish they had, would not stop me from recommending them to a family member or a friend. One being the lack of direct volume control on the headphones themselves, and two being the lack of a NFC chip. Two minor things, but things that would have scored these JBL, Free True Wireless In-Ear Headphones in Black, a five out of five stars on my rating.

Over Priced Creepy Face

These are a starter set of truly wireless Bluetooth earphones with a premium price tag attached to them. The JBL Free earphones have the idea down, but that's it. It's too soon and these are far too forgettable to warrant the $149.00 bill. The coolest part about these is the charging case. It makes a creepy, glowing, smiley face when charging. And the battery life is pretty good. ( Great actually) 4 hours initially then 20 more hours of juice from the creepy charging face case (24 hours People!!!.) The sound quality is said to be great, but to be honest, it's nothing to blog about about....wait.. Never mind. It could be so much better. The fit is hit or miss. I normally can take a pair of true wireless earbuds out of the package and hit the ground running , without fear of my earbuds doing the same. Not these. I had to search for that fit. Even after finding the ones that would stay put, I felt uneasy. The look of these isn't amazing , but they aren't horrid either. They don't stick out too much, but they are plain as plain gets. My biggest issue though, is connectivity. These buds kept unpairing while listening to music. I tried to move my phone closer to the earbud that unpaired, but that only served to annoy me. It had a mind of it's own in that area. So much so that I just put them on the shelf and went back to another brand all together. There's really not much good to say about these, especially when there are so many better/ affordable options out there. i can't recommend these. Again, they got the 3 stars because of the battery and funky charging case. Don't waste your time on these.

These are very comfortable. They stay in your ear, and have never felt like they are going to fall out. I have small ear canals, so I need small/deep tips. With the provided tips, I feel like they don't sit deeply enough in my ears, but they did stay w/o falling out.
I have tried with the provided tips as well as custom foam tips, I find them very comfortable w/the foam tips. I've worn them all day, and used them most of the day, never felt ear fatigue.
I find the charge to last longer than expected at this time. Combination of music and phone calls.
They have average sound / volume.
I've never had anyone tell me that they couldn't hear me on phone calls, I'm coming through clearly.
Connectivity is OK, but the bridge between right and left gets sketchy the farther away your phone gets from the right earbud. You can't use just the left one, so if you're in the car with someone driving... Though, admittedly I find myself just wearing the right one for phone calls and I'm liking this.
I really like the charger/case, but if you put custom tips on them (e.g. foam), you can't put them on the charger anymore w/o removing the tips, as they won't charge and the top won't close. I wish they'd have made the well for the tips just a bit deeper. I also have problems getting the buds to sit on the charger correctly, and have to mess with it to charge.
For background, I have some bluetooth LG Tones I really like, but they were getting old, sound isn't awesome but super functional for working out, driving, etc. I also have purchased PowerBeats 3, and really hated everything about those. I also have a Pair of Wireless Seinnheiser, as well as 2 pairs of wired Shure headphones.
Overall I really like these, but for $160, not sure I'll keep them (yet).
They are actually good, so that's why I give 4*. If I could use right or left only, and didn't have to take the tips off to charge, I'd probably give a 4.5. Better volume (louder/bass), would be a 5.

Great sound, but occasional disconnects
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Sound Quality
As is typical with most JBL products, the JBL Free headphones sound great when pressed properly into your ear. Highs and mids sound good and bass is prominent, but as these earbuds work themselves loose, bass decreases quickly. So if you're wearing these for a workout or a run, you'll notice a drop in sound quality as your ears get sweaty and these start to loosen.
Bluetooth Connection
Paired to an iPhone 6S, these earbuds performed very well indoors even if I walked into another room without my phone. I did notice a significant increase in brief disconnects of the left earbud in the following situations:
- Walking outside with the iPhone in my left pocket. The right earbud seems to need an almost "line of sight" connection to my iPhone when outside. Indoors, the disconnects happened less frequently when carrying the phone in my pocket.
- Wearing my earbuds near my computer or router. I'm guessing WiFi signals can interrupt these earbuds, which makes sense as WiFi and Bluetooth both can operate at the 2.4 GHz frequency.
Design
The earbuds kind of just "stick" in your ear. Initially, they were too loose for me, so I put on one of the included silicone jackets on the earbuds which helps add some "grip" and makes them less prone to sliding out of my ear.
There are also different size ear tips included so you can find the right fit for your ear. However, the earbuds do not have the stabilization "wings" that I typically see on other Bluetooth earbuds, so the fit is not as a secure as I would like.
The earbuds have a splash-proof IPX5 design that means they should be resistant against sweat and rain. However, only time will tell if they will stand up against my workouts, but so far so good.
Features
The earbuds can be used either as a pair or one-at-a-time for when you need to keep one ear open to hear your surroundings.
The controls for these earbuds are a little different than what I am normally used to.
Right Earbud:
Single press: Play/Pause
Double press: Siri/Google Assistant
Triple press: Pair the left and right earbuds
Left Earbud:
Single press: Skip track
Double press: Rewind track
Triple press: Pair the left and right earbuds
Unfortunately, you cannot control the volume directly on the earbuds. You will need to use your phone's volume controls.
The earbuds can be used to take phone calls as well, but please be aware the you'll only hear the call on the right earbud. When your phone is ringing, single press the right earbud to answer it.
To power off the earbuds, place them back in the charging case.
Battery Life
The earbuds themselves will get you about 4 hours of battery life. The battery case holds 5 additional charges, allowing you to get a total of 24 hours of playback.
To recharge the case itself, connect it to a Micro USB cable (plugged into a wall charger). The case's cover is translucent, so you can see the 4 white LEDs of the charging case and the white LEDs of the earbuds themselves while they're charging and the case is closed. It kind of reminds me of the charging indicators of that "dog" robot on Black Mirror.
Summary
Overall, the JBL Free are completely wireless and deliver great sound quality when pressed firmly into the ear. However, the earbuds are not very secure in my ear and tend to work themselves loose the longer I wear them. Battery life is decent at 4 hours with the charging case holding an additional 5 charges

These are pretty lightweight and more compact compared to other in ear headsets I’ve tried. They come with silicone wraps that help them stay put. I have small ears (inside and out) and they do fit pretty well, even for me.
One popped out during a high impact workout session, but for running they have stayed put well and were comfortable even wearing for an hour straight.
Note that there is no volume control on the buds. The only way to change volume is directly on your phone which isn't ideal if you want to change volume during a run or workout.
The sound is a bit tinny and there does not appear to be a companion app that can increase bass or decrease treble. Maybe they'll add that or fix via a future update.

I've been purchasing many different bluetooth earbuds trying to find the perfect fit for my small ear canals. These wireless buds sounds great, have powerful sound and are made to stay in your ear. BUT as a person who can't have in-ear buds in my canal for too long without causing fatigue, I can't say it's perfect. If isolation and sound quality is what you're looking for, then this is a great purchase.

I just purchased the wireless JBL earbuds 10/16/2017 and love them. JBL is well know for the premium bluetooth sounds like the Extreme and the Everest Elite 700 plus multiple other bluetooth devices. I love these earbuds they are simple to use and listen to. I like the idea once paired always paired and will turn off once in the charging case but will automatically connects once out of the case...love this feature. I would like if they had an app in order to gain some other features mainly an equalizer or ambience feature. I also notice that when on a call it goes to the right ear but you can turn the left on if needed just simply by holding the left ear button down until it beeps and it will connect with the right for the call. My music sound really great in these earbuds and I'm am well pleased with the sound. I would if JBL insignia wasn't so noticeable and the blinking blue light indicating connectivity. I'm anxiously waiting to see possible updates they may add to the already simply perfect JBL wireless earbuds.

I enjoy these earbuds very much. Sound quality is very good. They earbuds pair easily with each other and pair easily with my phone. They last me several hours before needing a charge. The left earbud occasionally cuts out for a second or two but always immediately comes back on if I give my head a little turn. These fit snug in my ears, and have never slipped out at all. I've had these earbuds for about 2 months now and I'm very satisfied with them. They are keepers and I would recommend to a friend.

Fixed sync Issue easily

I bought this to replace another brand pair that didnt work well. Got home, opened and synced it. Then I noticed the left side going put of sync. I was annoyed but did some research to see what could be causing it.
Cleared my phone's Bluetooth Cache, but it persisted.
Then someone mentioned syncing issues are often caused by wifi interference.
Left my living room and now, perfection. Sync issues have stopped completely. The sound is great and solid.
If you're like me, you may have set up your device in the same room or vicinity of a router in your home. Step away from that room, perhaps power off, back on and see if that eliminates your issue.
Hope that helps.
Great product.
Only suggestion is Volume control. Perhaps like JLab's earbud where you touch and hold right for volume up and left for volume down.

I was really excited about these since I loved the JBL Reflect Mini BT, but I can't. The sound is hallow without any bass and the fitment combination just couldn't stay in my ears. The recharging case is neat, but sometimes a pain. You have to hold the button down for a while just to cut off in the the earbuds. They will be returned today.

These earbuds for the most part, worked as they should. Battery life was good. I love the fact that they automatically connect to your phone when removed from the case. But I gave 2 stars because the volume is way too low. I tried all of the provided ear tips with the same results. Also one of the ears continuously disconnected; although for only a couple of seconds, it happened multiple times while in use. This got really annoying. I returned them.

I bought it two weeks ago (August 18th) in the Best Buy store during my stay in US. Unfortunately I have not tried to use it during my stay and then I back home and during my first use I noticed that left headphone was not charging and neither working. Today I tried to access the Harman-JBL warranty in Brazil and they told me there is no international warranty and also they have no information about this product because it is not sold in Brazil. So I have a defective headphone never used and with no solution about exchanging or fixing it.

I loved these earplugs! however the left ear plug did not work properly. When connecting 90% of the time, the left plug would not pair w the right earplug and the phone, which sucked! The battery life was awesome. Hopefully the company do a better job w this product. I had been using another brand’s Bluetooth neckband for quite some time, until they broke last week. So, on a whim, I purchased these JBL earbuds without doing any research. That was a HUGE mistake! Like everyone else, I had problems with the left earbud cutting out numerous times. I contacted JBL and they told me to do a factory reset. I did, and the problem continued. That was after 24 hours of ownership, then after 48 hours, the charger no longer accepts the right earbud! It’s like the magnet stopped working, which isn’t physically possible, so I can only assume it is no longer in position internally. If after only 48 hours these earbuds have that significant of an issue, then I’ll be returning these ASAP and getting another brand.
On a positive note, I did think they fit well and I barely even noticed they were in my ear other than not being able to hear the outside world. But if they don’t charge and cut out constantly (up to 12 times per minute last night) then they have no place in my pocket or in my ears. I really thought the JBL name stood for quality, but I was sadly mistaken. Don’t buy these!
