Depends what you mean by rear speaker. It is not a replacement for rear speakers if that was your question. You cannot just drop this in place of a rear speaker. You will not get the Mid and High frequencies provided by most rear speakers in place of a subwoofer. This would also require an enclosure. On the other hand you can run a good pair of component or coaxial speakers in the front, and just subwoofers in the back also without rear speakers. But an amplifier for your front speakers would be highly recommended to keep up with the subwoofer if that is the route you want to go with.
