“I am trying to connect my Galaxy 9note to this, in order to do maps, and have it read my messages. It makes calls, but isn't connecting w/ USB. I paid for the connector. Is the connector in addition to the one in my dash? (The only usb is in my dash).”

The usb in your dash is probably a charger only with no connection to the unit. You need a usb data cable from the back of the unit to your phone, in order to do maps etc. It should be a simple matter for the installers to plug a cable into the back of the unit and fish it out to your dash or glove box to connect your phone. You will probably need to have Bluetooth on and use Android Auto to make all this work.
