You don't HAVE to, but a wiring harness makes the installation easier. You could splice the wiring directly to your cars wiring, but that would require cutting off the existing factory harness. I'd recommend purchasing the appropriate wiring harness, which will let you splice the stereo wiring to the new harness, and simply plug that into the factory harness in the dash. That also makes it easier if you replace the stereo again in the future, as you'd just repeat the process with the new stereo without any damage or changes to the factory wiring.

Some vehicles have wires in their radio harness that are attached to additional controls that are located on your steering wheel or in other additional places. What you might need to look into is something called a, “Wiring integration kit.” This is a wire harness that will help you hook in a new radio and have wires for all of your additional features you do not want to lose that are built into the vehicle. There will be a wiring kit for your specific vehicle along with a wire map included. Ex: My 2014 Ford Focus has a additional 4” clock screen above the new JVC touchscreen radio and has volume control on steering wheel. Those things would not work if I do not have a integration harness that connects all of these things together.
