When using Android Auto make sure to use a Data cable which is the original cable that comes with your Android phone. A regular charging cable will not work so if your phone only charges then its just a charging cable. Make sure to get a data cable or get the original cable that comes with your phone. Once you plug in the Data cable it will automatically launch Android Auto.
