I am the original poster of this question. I wound up buying this unit. Prior to purchasing it, I read someone's answer to the same question on another website. This person said the limits are 999 folders and 20,480 files. They also said there is a limit of 999 files per folder. I can't confirm whether or not those are the actual limits, but I can confirm that it works for my specific use-case, which is 5,104 files and 686 folders. However, I can't figure out how to use the "Quick Search" feature. It's explained on page 12 of the owner's manual. You're supposed to press the "search" button (at least i assume it's called the "search" button - the manual doesn't name this button. It's the button to the immediate right of the phone button and to the left of the "1" button). Then you're supposed to be able to turn the volume knob to select a folder. But when I turn the volume knob, nothing happens. So either this doesn't work or I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I'll stop by Best Buy someday and ask the helpful technician who installed my system for help. The moral of the story for me is that you shouldn't count on playing music from a USB drive unless you're going with a double DIN touch screen. I kind of wish I had gone double DIN, but I'll be able to make do by streaming bluetooth from my phone.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is a USB structure layer that is used when it comes to USB files. To check into this please call JVC they will inform you on this as this varies from radio to radio.
