The directions say no, but I mounted 2 screws in the stud and 2 screws using dry wall plugs. My TV is smaller (37 inch) and weighs 16 pounds.

It might not line up exactly the way you want it but then you can adjust the arm to be where you want it. I wouldnt rely on the sheetrock, over time as you move the tv around the sheetrock will weaken and fail.
