It would be okay to play this game without playing the previous ones. Gives you a chance to get used to the game play and story. and you can play the originals when it comes out some time this year on the next gen consoles too

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is a 1hr movie on the disc called kingdom hearts backcover that does fill in some gaps, but I definitely recommend playing the others first. The 1.5 & 2.5 collection disc will be out in march for PS4!

Please try again later.It's totally okay to play this game, however it'll leave a lot of questions raised so it'd be best if you watch a explanation of the series before hand or you could wait till march where the first 6 games will be remastered for the ps4 in a single bundle priced at $50
