Hello Jackie! Convertible just means that it can that it can location of the drain pump can be changed. It does not just need to drain out the bottom of the unit. Thank you for your inquiry on our KitchenAid appliances.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The convertible icemaker has an attachment that allows the icemaker to drain elsewhere than straight out the bottom. We have an open drain in the floor positioned right under the ice maker, so the drainage just drips straight down into it. From what I've seen, I believe that even the non-convertible icemakers can be fitted with the attachment.

For ours, it is just gravity, since our floor drain is located right under the place in the unit where the water drips out. "Convertible" means that there should be some kind of extra plumbing that takes the drips from the unit and moves them to some other location to enter the house's drain. You would need to buy the "convertible" kit so that your plumber can make the connection. Hope this helps!
