Hello JSol, The sides of this unit are stainless but its not finished like the front panels are. If installed where a side would be open a panel would need to be built for it. We hope this helps.

Please try again later.I noticed from the installer that removed the older version of the same model that the frame down the sides of the refrigerator is designed to sit flush into a panel. That sliver of an edge you see on the side is designed to cover the gaps between the cabinet and fridge. I think this frame is removable. You can likely call Kitchenaid to verify and also if the side is Stainless. I do know the top is where the compressor is, so that would be exposed if you don't have a side cabinet to cover that portion.
