It is not too small, but I like to put more ice in a bowl in the freezer to have extra ice on hand if I ever need it for the ice chest. It takes about 12-24 hours to fill the bucket to capacity.

I've been on the fence for the same reason. A Whirlpool engineer recommends getting separate container of ice started prior to any large gatherings.
