• You need a vent for down draft but you don't need it for cooktop

• Yes. Or, at least it's supposed to. We purchased it for that exact reason but, since our kitchen renovation is not complete yet, we haven't installed it yet. But according to specifications, it can be set up for external or recycled ventilation.

• We have ours installed in our peninsula but our contractor had to install a vent to the outside. So, I don't believe it can be installed without a vent to outside but I'm sure someone at best buy can confirm.
