Yes, they are designed to be inserted into the wall by cutting out a section of drywall about 8" x 12'. Otherwise you would have to build a speaker box to put them into if you wanted to hang them from the wall. But if you were intending to hang them from the wall, you should just go with a regular bookshelf speaker unless you were trying to go for a low profile speaker that doesn't protrude from the wall as much as a bookshelf speaker. However, acoustics would be severely hampered with a small box. These speakers utilize the space in the walls to produce a very nice sound. Essentially, they turn the wall into a big speaker box.
