“Are these suitable for use as a standard rear surround in a 7.1 system? (non-Atmos). I'd like to angle these down toward the listener from the top corner of my media room. Is it better to just get a standard bookshelf for this purpose?”

Yes they are. That exactly what I’m using them for since towers have Dolby Atmos speakers in them.

The bookshelf is a cheaper way to go, just buy a bookshelf wall mount and angle it. That’s how I mounted my rear and surround. Besides you get more low/mids 60Hz n up with the bookshelf for the rear. These are mainly for 80Hz and up.

Yes you can use the speakers in a 7.1 system as the rear speakers they actually sound quite nice for what they are
