“Can I place these speakers on top of my 1975 JBL L26 speakers. And should I get a Denon 760 on sale for $425 or a Sony receiver? for $438? And do I need a sub woofer?”

Yes you can set on top or to the wall your choice I put mine on the wall high 7 to 8 ft. I have owed Denon and Onkyo I believe it's a personal choice and depends on model both are great
