Yes, you'd need a receiver. The setup you're describing would not at all work.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Theae are quality audio speakers, not amplified at all. You so need something to power them. You don’t need a large expensive receiver. You do need a simple amp. I used a Monoprice Hybrid Tube amp at around $200. Awesome sound.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No you don't necessarily need a receiver and can power them off a woofer, but beware that these speakers aren't meant to be used as stage monitors persay and can be vulnerable to getting blown out should too much wattage flow to the input.
