Although stated MTBFs may be greater if a drive is used daily and holds data that is critical to you I would suggest replacing it every 18 to 24 months. Given the cost of HDDs today it is much less expensive to replace a drive than to try and recover data from it. That said, I have drives that are six years old and have been spinning flawlessly. Question is: Do you feel lucky?
