Yes, 8gig and yes. The ram requires you open the case which will void your warranty but I find 4gig is adequate for most use. You can also replace the HD with a SSD but again requires opening the case. I replaced the CD drive with a SSD (Requires $6 adapter) and cloned the HD to it. Then change the boot drive in setup and the HD stays in place as a backup and you run from the SSD. The improvement is significant - really make it a totally diff machine.

The maximum RAM this configuration can support is 8GB, so your certified technician can replace the 4GB with 8GB RAM. With regard to replacing the 500GB hard drive, your certified technician can replace the existing hard drive with a compatible replacement. Check with your certified technician for your options.
