It uses Okey Google command and recognize your voice. I have my Google dot, this display and phone to be triggered at the same time by voice command

In most instances only the device you are closest to will verbally respond. Yu can adjust the sensitivity of your device to "Okay google" from the device settings in the Google Home App. To make free video calls with Google Duo the person you are calling will need the Google Duo App on their smart phone or tablet. Google Smart Displays with this feature can make calls between each other as well.
