Depends on your definition of average. Unless you run a 64 bit OS, it won't make any difference, If you do run 64 bit, it also depends on what type of display adapter you have. For a computer that uses shared memory for the video device, 8Gb is a must, for a system with it's own video memory, 6gb is usually sufficient, unless you do a lot of gaming, Video or sound editing, or large speadsheets.
