It can be removed. Be careful, but the sliding panel is held in place by plastic tabs on both sides. I would open up the case and you should see them...if I remember maybe three per side. Gently push each tab to release and the panel cover comes off

If you will be using the built in CD/DVD drive a majority of the time, you can use the ports on the back of the computer rather than those on the right side of the front panel.
