“I have a 2011 iMac which can drive the resolution. what cabling should i hook up with, i have dvi to vga going on currently with other lower resolution monitor, will i get full resolution with a dvi to hdmi dongle?”

check the dongel specs? I've run this with an HDMI cable using a usbc to HDMI dongle on a 2017 macbook pro, and using a usbc to displayport cable. I don't know the iMac specs.

This monitor has a HDMI or Display Port input on it. For a more crisp picture use the DVI to HDMI Dongle. I don't think you will see a lower resolution, however that depends on your GPU.

The cable is immaterial. Check out your graphic card to make sure it supports higher resolutions.

That depends on the maximum resolution your DVI side can support on your adapter. A single-link DVI connector can display a maximum resolution of 1920×1200 – A dual-link's maximum for that same screen is 2560×1600. We recommend you check the maximum resolution supported by your adapter.
