A docking station is usually made for a specific laptop. With one connection to the dock you can attach your laptop to multiple peripheral accessories like monitors, printers and external hard drives. A docking station adds additional ports available to the laptop. Then when you need to move the laptop, rather than disconnecting all the peripheral accessories, you just disconnect the laptop from the dock, leaving the peripherals attached to the dock for reconnection to the laptop later.
