Open-box refers to an item that Best Buy carries that a customer has returned to the store and Best Buy (Geek Squad, in some instances) refurbishes the product and then re-sells in store (most times, a customer returns an item because it isn't the right color or the right fit for their needs). New refers to an item that Best Buy carries that has come directly from the manufacturer to Best Buy via their warehouse. Hope this answers your question.

The product is returned to the sales floor as an "Open Box" item for resale. A new item has never been opened or sold.
