• 10 1/2 inches will clear the top. allow more if want to put things on top of it.

• It needs to be able to breath. I would leave at least 3 inches above this unit. And 4 - 5 inches on the sides.

• Officially I think it is 2-4"....I have a little less than that all around but it does not malfunction or overheat at all.
