I think if it's just being turned off for a short period of time, it will be okay. I have a feeling if it's turned off for an extended period of time, the manufacturer wants you to discard the new ice made for the first 24 hours to ensure the water line is flushed and working properly with no sediments, etc. When it's new, that is what the directions say.
