The door handles are removable but you will see the holes if you are thinking about leaving them off. You do not need much air space on the sides of the refrigerator- can be a pretty tight fit. The right door would not open to a full 90 degrees next to a wall due to the handle. I have seen refrigerators with no handles which probably would work better for you.
