Definitely not necessary. Our washer and dryer combo are setup with out pedestals so we can use the tops for folding clothes.

The pedestal is an add-on option, it is not necessary :) Some people find it more comfortable, because the washer door is higher up. It also helps store and organize laundry detergents and other things.
