The conversion from WATTS to the sound db level it will produce is not an easy answer. It depends on the efficiency of your speakers and what kind of "db" and "watts" you are talking about. Typically, none of this information is given on low end equipment. In general, on reasonably efficient speakers, a 100 watt RMS signal will run you out of the room assuming a normal size living room. You only want the 100 watt RMS or more capability to provide the dynamic range most classical music requires. For watching TV this can be a problem as you can't hear the dialog between the gun blasts and background noise unless they play games and compress the sound a bit.
