We have it 9 inches from the wall, but you could probably get it in a bit tighter. You just want to leave at least 6 inches away; so it's not bent near the connections. NOTE: It's pulled out from the wall because I literally found out yesterday after 7 months of ownership...you have to clean the lint trap in the front bottom right of the machine at least once a quarter. I wasn't great about it with the regular washer by lg that i had from 2006, but since this drains water thru the drain plug/filter during the drying cycle, the lint gets hard and matted together.
