I'm not sure if this answer applies to your exact situation but I was going through the same situation with not getting a full screen. I had to change a setting on my cable box to output 16.9 format instead of the 4.3 format and it made the image full screen.

Believe me i was one of the holdouts with standard definition .You have a HDTV so the only way to enjoy the picture quality is not to Zoom but to go ahead an buy the HDTV input------Or it is like scan mode and you never truly see the whole picture. I could not believe all I was missing
