Sorry,  I’ve never tried that. I just don’t put fabric softener in the tray if I don’t want any.

It will not be possible to perform a wash cycle without using fabric softener if you have it in the fabric softener compartment for the ENERGY STAR® Certified LG 5.3 cu. Ft.
